Opera Mobile 10.1 Public Beta for Android Now Available

While the stock Android browser does its job very well there is definitely some room for competition. Opera have already gained a large Android following with their Opera Mini browser which compresses pages to within an inch of their lives. Opera Mini is especially useful when you have a slow network connection or if you’re trying to save as much bandwidth as possible without giving up mobile browsing completely.

While Opera Mini certainly serves a purpose it doesn’t quite match up to the stock Android browser when it comes to a more fully featured browsing experience. That’s where Opera Mobile comes in. For some time Opera Mobile was the only sensible choice of browser for Windows Mobile users so Opera have certainly had a decent amount of practice when it comes to creating mobile browsers.

This release may only be a public beta rather than the finished product but things are looking good so far. All the expected features are present including pinch-to-zoom, support for location services, desktop browser sync and speed dial. Tab management is a massive improvement over the stock Android browser and Opera Turbo can help keep you browsing quickly even when you only have access to a slow connection.

Opera Mobile 10.1 is definitely ready to be used as your default browser should you wish and although it doesn’t feel quite as responsive to us as the stock browser the extra features just about give it the edge. Opera Mobile 10.1 Beta is available now on the Android market and we definitely suggest you give it a try. If you don’t already own an Android phone then maybe it’s time to recycle your old mobile phone and join the Opera Mobile party.
