Motorola phones have been great and have certainly pushed boundaries. Just remember the iconic Motorola Razr back in 2004- a phone on everyone’s wish list. Then, Motorola stepped out of its comfort zone of producing mid-range phones and released a foldable Motorola Razr. Don’t get us wrong, Motorola’s budget offerings are good value for money and the foldable Razr showed other tech giants that they shouldn’t discount Motorola. But, we haven’t seen a top range phone from Motorola for years, until now.
Motorola launched a flagship duo with impressive specs, display, and 5G connectivity. The new flagships are also the priciest ones in this range released by Motorola. Does this mean that the Motorola Edge and the Motorola Edge Plus are finally ready to take a slice of the flagship market cake? Let’s find out.

Motorola calls the display Endless Edge as it curves almost 90 degrees and goes all the way down the edges. It offers additional functionality such as tap to return to the previous app for example and the edge settings can be changed to make it visually less curved. We haven’t seen displays that are this curvy even from Samsung- the pioneer of curved displays. Both flagships have a 90Hz refresh rate for seamless scrolling and will feature a 6.7 inches FHD+ OLED panel with 1080 x 2340 resolution. The HDR10+ on the Edge Plus makes its display a tiny bit more premium.
You won’t find a physical fingerprint sensor on the new Motorola flagships, because Motorola added an under-screen fingerprint reader which does add more high-end feel to the flagships.

Moving on to the camera setup, the Edge Plus features the biggest sensor Motorola could fit. The main camera is 108MP, paired with an 8MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom and a 16MP 117 degrees ultra-wide camera. There’s also a depth sensor. The Motorola Edge shares the same camera specs apart from the main sensor- it’s 64 MP.
On the front, the punch hole cameras are sitting in the top right corner and have a 25MP wide angle sensor.

Motorola went big on batteries as well fitting a 5,000 mAh battery cell on the Edge Plus and a 4,500 mAh cell on the Edge, which means up to two full days of battery life according to Motorola. The Edge and the Edge Plus offer 18W fast charging, whereas the Edge Plus also supports wireless charging at 15W and reverse charging at 5W.
The Motorola Edge Plus runs on the newest Snapdragon 865 mobile platform and offers 5G connectivity, 256GB of storage and 12GB of RAM. The Motorola Edge is powered by a less powerful yet speedy Snapdragon 765 processor, which supports 5G, has 6GB of memory and 128GB of storage. As well as this, you can also expand the internal storage with a micro SD card with up to 1TB.
The new Motorola flagships are coming out on the 14th of May in the US and will be exclusive to Verizon. Unfortunately, there are no mentions of Motorola Edge and Edge Plus making their way to the UK, but they will be launching in a handful of the EU countries, starting at €1,199.
The two flagships have significant differences in processing power, camera setup and battery capacity, however they are both competitive devices with an impressive display, dual stereo speakers powered by Wave, a headphone jack and 5G support. Who would have thought that we might see a flagship with a headphone jack in 2020? The new Motorolas will make their mark on the smartphone market, however despite decent specs on paper, we think that they’re still slightly overpriced. It’s a shame we won’t be able to get our hands on one in the UK, but the situation might change and Motorola might partner with UK networks to launch their 2020 flagships at a later date in the UK.
