Ice Cream Sandwich Arrives on Nexus S

The hugely popular Google Nexus One received official Android updates long after the release of the Nexus S and that trend has continued with the Nexus S now receiving an update to Android 4.0.3 despite the recent release of the Galaxy Nexus.

Although the Galaxy Nexus is now the current choice for Android users who want the purest experience of the hugely popular OS many users are still more than happy with the Nexus S and will be delighted when they receive the notification to tell them the new update is now ready to install.

As Android 3.0 was designed for tablet devices the Nexus S will jump straight from Android 2.3 to 4.0.3 and with the update will receive a number of improvements and entirely new features.

The user interface of Ice Cream Sandwich has had a significant overhaul and takes an even further step away from the now dated interface of pre-2.3 Android first seen on the T-Mobile G1. An improved lock-screen, the ability to unlock your phone using facial recognition and a much more usable keyboard are just some of the many changes sure to please Nexus S owners.

Once again this proves that unless you’re willing to root your device and install unofficial updates then sticking with Google Experience handsets is the best way to keep up to date with the latest Android releases. While Google do eventually stop updating devices they certainly make sure Google Experience handsets are supported for much longer than most handsets from manufacturers such as HTC, Motorola and Sony Ericsson.

If you have a Nexus S and haven’t got the update yet then it should be coming very soon. Remember that waiting until you’re connected to a Wi-Fi network is the best way to avoid extra charges on your bill if you don’t have a generous internet allowance on your tariff.
