Facebook Focus On Mobile

Yesterday Facebook held an event where they shared their plans for mobile expansion. One of the main focuses of the event was on plans to use a single sign in for mobile applications, using your Facebook login of course.

The plan is to allow users to login using their Facebook ID across a variety of mobile apps just by hitting a login with Facebook button. We think it’s a great idea, entering usernames and passwords is enough of a pain on PC, let alone on a mobile device.

The other big news was the continued development of Places for Facebook. Some very interesting plans were announced, one of the biggest new ideas being the Deals Platform. The idea is that you can claim deals from nearby places, for example if there was a clothes store nearby using the Deals Platform you may be able to claim a discount. It’s an interesting idea and it certainly adds a reason to use Places other than just letting your friends know what you’re up to.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg admitted that the Facebook App for Android has lagged behind the iPhone. He put the lack of parity down to the company employed to develop the Android App being bought out by Google shortly before the project was finished. The situation is slowly being rectified though and yesterday saw the release of a new version of the Android App which brings Places and Groups. A new version of the iPhone App also added Groups. Improvements were also made to notifications.

The plans seem very interesting and Facebook clearly see the potential of increasing their mobile presence and news that the Android App is slowly becoming the equal of the iPhone version means that there is no longer any need to recycle your mobile for cash in despair.
