Apple Officially Reveal iPad 2

Almost immediately after the original iPad was released rumors of second tablet from Apple began to circulate and today with the iPad approaching its first birthday Steve Jobs finally lifted the lid on the iPad 2 at an event held by Apple.

While the new iPad looks very similar to the old model at a glance, closer inspection reveals a number of cosmetic changes while internally the new model features some even more significant upgrades.

It should come as no surprise that Apple have managed to make the iPad 2 thinner than the original, but what is rather surprising is that the iPad 2 is actually thinner than an iPhone 4. At just 8.8mm the iPad 2 looks absolutely stunning while the weight is the device has been reduced by 15% too.

One change which should have a huge impact is the switch from Apple’s 1Ghz A4 processor to the new Dual-core 1.2Ghz A5 chip, Apple say this will make the iPad 2 incredibly fast and the graphics performance is said to be 9x that of the original iPad. Quite amazingly, despite being both thinner and more powerful the iPad 2 preserves the 10-hour battery life of the original iPad.

The new iPad features both a front-facing camera for FaceTime video chat and a rear camera capable of shooting HD video. Apps to make use of these new cameras such as iMovie and Photo Booth are being released alongside the iPad 2 in addition to the fantastic looking GarageBand for iPad.

Other innovations include a specially designed cover which puts the iPad 2 to sleep or wakes it whenever opened or closed. It’s called the Smart Cover and it’s clear a lot of thought has gone into the design, it even folds up to become a stand for watching videos or typing more comfortably.

Perhaps most surprisingly of all the new iPad will cost the same as the old model, which means the iPad 2 will still be much cheaper than many of its rivals. The good news for those who would love an iPad but aren’t too bothered about the new features is the original model is now available at just £329 on Apple’s online store.

We’re very impressed with the iPad 2 and new accessories such as an adapter to allow video-out via HDMI complete an already excellent package. The only thing we’d really like to see is a widescreen display to make the iPad 2 even better for watching video.

Those looking to make the upgrade may be interested to know that a number of recycling companies are more than happy to buy your old iPad to help you pay for the new model. Check our iPad recycling for cash section to see how much you can get. The iPad 2 is available from March 25th in the UK.
