Microsoft Putting Big Money Behind Windows Phone 7, Xbox Live To Sound Better Than Ever Before

Friday, August 27th, 2010

Here’s http://www.compareandrecycle.co.uk’s round-up of the latest technology news:

Microsoft Improving Xbox Live Chat Quality

Since Xbox Live launched (way back in 2002) one thing has remained constant, the fairly awful quality of the in-game voice chat. Well that’s finally going to change as Microsoft plan to increase the voice quality of Live chat as part of the update which will introduce the new Kinect features later this year.

Earlier this year Microsoft pulled the plug on their online service for original Xbox games. Many suspected that this was in order to increase the limit on the number of friends you can have on Xbox Live, but maybe it was also in order to allow an increase in the bitrate of voice communication, as it may have been backwards compatibility with older games that was holding this back too.

Windows Phone 7 Launch to Cost $1 Billion

It’s been suggested that the launch of Windows Phone 7 will cost in the region of $1 Billion, but even with that kind of financial backing can Microsoft really compete Android, iPhone and Blackberry?

One thing in Microsoft’s favour is the fact they’ve managed to do it before, they entered a games console market dominated by Playstation, pumped a lot of money behind their console, and nearly ten years later the Xbox 360 is doing very well for itself.

There has been a lot of interest in Windows Phone 7 and many of the biggest players in the mobile world including HTC, LG, Samsung and Sony-Ericsson will be releasing hardware that runs WP7. It’s likely that the success of WP7 will rest on how well developers support the platform, there’s little doubt that iPhone probably wouldn’t be as popular without it’s huge library of apps.

It’s clear Microsoft are pushing harder for success in the mobile market than ever before but we’ll have to wait until later this year to see if consumers share their enthusiasm.

HTC Desire HD Imminent, PS3 Gets Hacked

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

Here’s http://www.compareandrecycle.co.uk’s round-up of the latest technology news:

USB Dongle Allows PS3 to Play Backups

The original Playstation suffered from piracy thanks to the low cost, widely available modchips and while new laws concerning chipping consoles helped to reduce the damage by the time the PS2 came around, piracy was still a problem for Sony.

Until now the PS3 had managed to resist the various attempts from hackers to allow users to play backups, which was in no small part down to frequent firmware updates and the removal of the ‘Other OS’ feature, but with the use of a USB Dongle piracy is set to explode on the PS3.

Using similar methods seen on PS3 development machines the PSJailbreak allows the playback of backups from disc, HDD or even network storage and so far the device appears to be the real deal with no reports of a hoax.

Sony may find it easy to take legal action since Nintendo have had recent victories over the R4 card which performs a similar function for the Nintendo DS. It seems likely that honest users will suffer the most as the PSJailbreak is likely to spark a firmware war, meaning that to use the Playstation Network service users will probably need to update their console software to the latest version on an even more regular basis as Sony attempt to block the USB device from being used with the console.

HTC Desire HD Looking Likely

Rumours of a HTC Desire HD have been floating around and such a device always seemed quite likely to happen no matter whether there was any basis for the rumours.

Recently though the device has popped up in a few places including Amazon and Mobiles.co.uk and so it seems as though the successor to the current top-dog of Android phones could be just around the corner with an announcement likely at HTC’s London press event next month.

With a 4.3″ screen, Android 2.2 and and 720P video recording it looks like the Desire HD will be a step ahead of most currently available phones and with no current equivalent to the US-Only Evo 4G could become the model of choice for the serious European Android user.
